Xero vs. Banklink

JCCA Chartered Accountants - Monday, September 19, 2011

By Judith Cambridge

The 21st century accounting software versus the 20th! Sound brutal, well it's time we admitted it to our clients.

Bank link gets imported from the bank via the Banklink portal (who count the number of transaction lines for billing purposes), imported to the Accountants office servers and then forwarded to the client for further coding.  Client codes that cash data and or has accountant code it, normally every two months when GST is due, sends back to accountant, accountant checks and recodes/ codes as required and mails/ emails back year to date cash trading reports to client. The reports  are typically three weeks out of date at best and have no reporting of the Balance Sheet, Accounts Payable or Accounts Receiveable. They are a poor proxy for solid profitability and tax planning. And how does the client see what their business is doing after work any night of the week or weekend? OK, they go to online banking and look at their balances!
Apparently this keeps the accountant in control of the data and the client can relax on the beach!

That solution was the best we could do for SME clients 15 years ago! And it was great for awhile, but then we realized we couldn't see the whole business picture. Where was the net profit before tax line? Where was the Balance Sheet?
Banklink with its out of date cash reporting is NOT a 21st century solution where social media can bring down a government and business moves even faster.

Welcome to a simple accounting solution that actually provides access to a businesses financials 24/7 from any Internet portal. Welcome to the cloud!
Low cost subscription software XERO automatically sucks your bank transactions from your bank or credit cards into the back of your web based Xero accounting programme, daily as the banks release the data! Invite your accountant, administrator and business advisor team into your Xero for 'virtual support'!
Now you have Cash Reports, Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Asset Schedule, Accounts Receiveable, Accounts Payables up to last night! Go see your banker and ask to login into their internet, they will love you for it!

The game has changed! Our client businesses deserve better from their accountants and I for one am not afraid to take this 'real time challenge'!

Game On!

The Engine Behind your Business

JCCA Chartered Accountants - Monday, August 29, 2011

Take care of your engine!
By Alex DePew

Accounting is the engine that drives every business.  Accounting, eh?  Everyone loves accounting! Well maybe not everyone.  But if you run a business I believe you should at least have a basic understanding of accounting as well as having professionals you can trust to look at your books and make sure they make sense.  I’m going to take this engine/accounting metaphor a bit further to hopefully get you to view accounting in a new light.

If you neglect the maintenance of your engine the car will eventually just stop running.  So too will your business fail if you ignore or put off the accounting behind it for too long.  Every business needs to mind its compliance, accounts receivables, accounts payables, payroll as well as tax.  I’m not suggesting that every business owner should go out and become a chartered account, just as not every car owner has to be a licensed mechanic.  You do however have to take regular care of your engine/accounting to keep it running smoothly.  This is where we come in.  Just as you wouldn’t want an unqualified mechanic working on your car, using a bookkeeper who doesn’t have the bigger picture in mind is equally ill advised.  Our firm works on both aspects of the engine, administrative and accounting.  We have a qualified admin team who can handle all your day to day needs while having chartered accountants to oversee their work as well as anything that goes beyond their scope.  It’s like having a race day pit crew at your disposal!

Time is the gas that keeps your car running.  Our goal is to make your engine as efficient as possible and use as little gas/time as possible.  By using Xero, a very straightforward and easy platform that works from your browser, you can access your information and take care of your accounting tasks from anywhere you have an internet connection.  Click here to read more about Xero.
There is also the option of having a professional mechanic keeping your engine fine tuned and full of gas allowing you to only worry about driving your car/business.  For those people who need their full attention to be focused on growing their business or who don’t want the expense of employing a full time accounts person, our team can handle all your accounting and admin needs which offers you the knowledge that your books are being handled in a professional manner while still allowing you to have up to the minute visibility any time you want.

Contact us today and let us know how we can help you keep your business on the right track.

Behind the Numbers: In Defence of Accounting!

JCCA Chartered Accountants - Tuesday, August 23, 2011

By Alex DePew

Welcome to our first blog post!  The goal of this blog is to give practical advice, tell interesting stories and relate useful information while not boring our readers to tears with accounting terms and concepts.   My job will be to not only inform, but to entertain as well as build a solid relationship with you the reader.  Accounting doesn’t have to be boring!  So new reader, I want you to know that comments and questions are encouraged.  This blog will work best as a two way conversation.  Every so often I will ask for subscriber questions that they would like answered.  The most interesting question will be chosen and along with my trusty team we will give as concise an answer as possible and in plain English too!  Since I am not a chartered accountant I will always defer to my more knowledgeable compatriots for answers to specific questions I can’t answer.

I’m excited to start this conversation with you and look forward to keeping you informed, entertained and hopefully laughing every so often.
